Overview

The "Soundwalk in South East London" is a time-limited creative health initiative led by Dr. Madison Miller, a practitioner specialising in soundscapes for relaxation. Delivered in partnership with Centerpieces, a mental health charity in South East London, the programme aimed to introduce nature soundwalks as a creative practice to support relaxation and wellbeing for adults with diverse conditions and abilities. The project took place at Hall Place, South East London, and culminated in the creation of an immersive, shared digital soundscape.

The Soundwalk demonstrates the potential of creative, nature-based digital interventions to support relaxation and wellbeing in diverse communities. Through inclusive methodology, strong partnerships, and innovative use of technology, the project offers a replicable model for enhancing mental health through creative practice.

Approaches & Methodology

The methodology centred on experiential, participatory soundwalks, where volunteers explored nature through both sight and sound. Participants captured photographs and audio recordings during guided walks, which were then combined to produce a collaborative digital soundscape. This approach emphasised inclusivity, creativity, and the therapeutic potential of connecting with nature, leveraging digital arts such as VR/AR and projection mapping to enhance the experience.

Aims & Objectives

The primary aim was to introduce nature soundwalks as a relaxation tool for Centerpieces’ community. Including

  • Providing a creative, accessible activity for people with diverse abilities and conditions.
  • Facilitating relaxation and emotional wellbeing through engagement with nature and creative expression.
  • Producing a shared digital soundscape to extend the benefits of the experience beyond the walk itself.

Outcomes & Measured Impact

Feedback from participants indicated that both the soundwalks and the resulting digital soundscape promoted relaxation and enjoyment. Quantitative and qualitative data showed that relaxation was achieved during the walk and through subsequent engagement with the online soundscape. All participants reported positive experiences, highlighting the value of creative participation and immersion in the final production.
