More Than the Diagnosis: Five Years of the GP SIG for Creative Health

Dr Grace McGeoch was joined in conversation with other colleagues Dr Amal Lad, Professor Martin Marshall, Dr Simon Opher MP, Dr Kathleen Wenaden, and Professor Louise Younie for the third session in a series of Webinars hosted by the GP Special Interest Group (SIG) for Creative Health with the aim to provide space for expert voices, lived experience, and connection.

Webinar theme: A GP trainer in Inverness came across the Art of Medicine website and it changed how they teach. A Devon GP attended a SIG away day and found the connection and inspiration they needed to navigate a time of personal grief. A Resident Doctor was encouraged to share their poetry at a SIG webinar and is now seen in their wholeness by colleagues. Every day across the UK, GPs take small actions to help patients, trainees and colleagues that are beyond the question of “what is the diagnosis?” They might not identify as creative but they are practicing creative health.

2026 marks five years of the Royal College of General Practitioners Special Interest Group for Creative Health. The SIG is growing and now has more than 150 members across the four nations and an active WhatsApp group.

This RCGP SIG has been set up to support and inspire GPs who have a special interest in creativity, and who advocate for creative health within General Practice. The Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) has supported the creation of this group and the National Centre for Creative Health provides the Secretariat.
